This week's weather forecast for the Southwest Iowa area predicts extremely cold temperatures, with lows dropping below zero. Homeowners may be concerned about the risk of frozen pipes. Here are some tips to help prevent this potential disaster in your home.

Preventive Measures for Extreme Cold to Avoid Pipe Freezing:

  1. Open cabinet doors leading to exposed pipes (e.g., sink access doors) to allow household air to warm them.
  2. Keep attached garage doors closed to protect plumbing routed through this unheated space.
  3. Turn on a faucet farthest from the water entry point to create a slow drip, preventing pipe freezing.
  4. Maintain a thermostat setting above 65 degrees when leaving your home or business for an extended period.

What to Do If You Suspect a Frozen Pipe:

  1. Take immediate action - either thaw the pipe yourself or call a plumber for assistance.
  2. If thawing on your own, shut off the water or test the shut-off valve to prevent sudden gushing when the pipe thaws.
  3. Thaw the pipe slowly to avoid potential breakage; a hair dryer aimed at the frozen area is suitable, or simply place a space heater near the pipe.
